With the lease for Winslow General Hospital set to expire in 1950, local leaders began exploring options for a new hospital. Although the lease was temporarily renewed, the vision for a community-owned hospital began to take shape.

Tragedy turned into purpose when two young women, Carol Lee Doonan and Barbara Dodson, lost their lives in a car accident. Their families established a memorial fund, which became the spark for a new community hospital. Volunteers rallied to support what would become Winslow’s first truly community-built hospital.
After years of grassroots fundraising and collaboration, Winslow Memorial Hospital opened with 16 staff members—marking the beginning of a new era of healthcare in the region.
The facility transitions to Little Colorado Medical Center and becomes certified as a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital, improving care for rural communities.
